How many “easy questions” do BIM Managers receive from their staff; that can be answered with a simple 1-2 sentence answer?

Now –How many process-based questions do BIM Managers receive daily; that typically require a series of short answers, explanations and demonstration?

These questions provide BIM Managers with “Teachable Moments” for their staff or  “Moments of Learning” for both staff and the BIM Manager.

One thing I can assure you –you will have staff members asking the same questions and sometimes they will ask you several times.

Repetition is how we ALL learn.

So, if “Time is Money”; you can’t afford to waste the time of your staff, the project, the company or your own daily time schedule.

Saving time and proactively building a Revit video library of short 2-3 minute videos; that answer common process-based questions — puts the BIM Manager in control of time while delivering on-demand learning & technical support.

For camera-shy BIM Managers –you don’t need to use cameras or be on camera.

Since 2008, I’ve used the screen recording software, Camtasia Studio and SnagIt from TechSmith for creating my Revit technical support and training videos.

Camtasia records your mouse movements on your computer screen –while you are using a feature or performing a process in the application software (Revit, Excel, AutoCAD). It also records your voice as you explain and train on a short procedure.

Once you complete the recording, save the screen-capture to a Camtasia project file.

Next, select the “Produce and Share” command to create a video file in Windows (AVI\WMV) or MAC (MP4) video formats.

Store your published video files in your company training and support library for future use as…

Organize and store your videos in short, descriptive folder names that use hyphens instead of spaces.

Folder Name Examples:

Video files names use the same procedure.

Video Name Examples:

• Revit_Continuous_Dimensioning.avi
• Revit_Zoom_Pan_Tips.mp4
• Revit_Object_Visibility_On_Off_Controls.wmv

Intellectual Property Watermark

Camtasia provides a procedure to Insert a custom Watermark (company logo) in every frame of your video recording when it is processed. This insures the company videos are identified as company intellectual property.

Camtasia can publish your videos to multiple video formats, including HD resolutions for  for both Windows and Mac. This is includes special settings and screen sizes for mobile devices. (phones, tablets, Apple, Droid, etc)

Recording Tips:

1. Keep your video-audio snippets short (2-4 minutes),
2. If it exceeds 4 minutes –you maybe covering too many topics in one video
3. As the software changes, your shorter videos will be easier to update.
4. Create longer videos using Camtasia to splice 5 videos into one video–mix and match
5. Your videos are “tiny topics” that are more easily learned and retained.
6. Avoid clearing your throat and saying Um-ms or Ah-hhs…keep a glass of water nearby
7. Avoid monotone or speaking too fast –use short sentences.

Lean Construction Institute (LCI) teamed with McGraw-Hill on a survey of the construction environment regarding the use of Lean Construction across the industry.

The final survey results are captured in a SmartMarket Report titled;

• Lean Construction: Leveraging Collaboration and Advanced Practices to Increase Project Efficiency

Here are few highlights from the full (60-page) study:

Lean construction offers an alternative that allows companies to thrive in any economic conditions; in combination with BIM and pre-fabrication, Lean makes firms more competitive and yields strong business benefits.

Surveyed companies cited such benefits as higher quality construction, greater customer satisfaction, greater productivity, and improved safety.

Advanced modeling: BIM has become an increasingly common tool among GCs, and some emphasized that advanced uses of BIM facilitate Lean efforts; when planning and detailing work. In particular, GCs noted that detailed modeling is central to coordinating and detailing offsite prefabrication.

It is noteworthy that, even among the Lean practitioners, none of the respondents report using 4D schedule modeling or 5D cost modeling. The Lean experts interviewed in the in-depth interviews frequently mention the importance of BIM to implementing Lean at their firms. (see page 17)

While a few of these experts do report doing 4D schedule modeling, the larger survey results reveal that this is still a highly limited practice.

Two things were perceived as continuing challenges:

1) education about Lean and the need for and benefits of increasing efficiency are lacking in the industry as a whole, and

2) technologies currently in place could be much improved to support a more highly collaborative environment.

Model Development Specification (MDS) contractually defines model Level of Development (LOD), by who and when. Andy Jizba, Mayo Clinic BIM Manager demonstrated how MDS reduced redundant modeling for the project teams on their Mayo Clinic project located in Phoenix, AZ.

Transitioning from AutoCAD to Revit  by architect Steven Shell — provided a great round table discussion with designers and contractors migrating their office processes to a Revit environment. This was my second Steven Shell class -my first was in August 2013 at Central State Revit Workshop in Omaha -

Which of these best describes your current situation?

1. My job doesn’t use Revit, but I want to improve my future job options.
2. My employer uses Revit, but I lack the Revit training.
3. I’m unemployed or not employed in my choice of design + construction jobs that use Revit.

Depending on your location, timeline and available financing; here are 3 options:

• Register for a technical \ community college Revit 101 semester class.(12-16 weeks)
• Purchase Revit classroom training from an Autodesk Reseller. (3-5 consecutive days)
• Purchase Revit online training or class from a technical college, Reseller or Certified Revit Trainer-Consultant. (time frame to complete class varies)

Consider obtaining basic Revit Certification as your ultimate goal is to improve your employment  options. Here are a few of these options to achieve that goal.

Revit-BIM Experience Required | Architect – Engineer – Construction Jobs

The value of technical college classes is largely dependent on the instructor’s background implementing the software on “live projects”. Many times the night instructors that work in design + construction firms during the day; will teach the night classes.

The value of using an Authorized Autodesk Reseller\Consultant –is they regularly teach and implement Revit on live design projects with their clients.

Both the college and reseller; should know organizations that are using Revit –which should provide you with potential contacts for seeking employment.

TIP: Once you have a college email address; you may qualify to download the free Revit Educational Version Software to your computer. Ask the school for details.

Revit Educational software encrypts your Revit files with an Educational (Student) Watermark — so DON’T use these files with any commercial project, as your files will permanently contaminate the commercial project. This version is fully functional including saving and printing.

Autodesk Users Group International (www.augi.com) has Revit tutorials; so you can keep practicing during and after your classes.

Next, schedule to take a basic Autodesk Revit Certification Exam –most Autodesk Revit Resellers offer regular Certification Exams it in their local offices each month.

Personally and professionally, I encourage you to take a “structured class” (college or Reseller) and use the self-learning tools to complement the class — as classes are great networking tools.

I’ve trained more than 700 professionals to use Revit. I took every structured class available for my training; complementing those classes with self-learning tools. Remember, we’re learning structured Revit processes to create a building for documentation –NOT just Revit command’s picks and clicks.

Find a local Revit User Group (RUG); to connect with the local design + construction community using Revit. The AUGI.com site may help you find a RUG or ask local architects, technical college or Autodesk Reseller as they would know who to contact.
