Assembling your Revit Implementation Puzzle, requires a transition of all the “pieces” –your organization, staff, technologies, project workflows, consultants and clients from  CAD-based processes to your future BIM-based processes.

Based on 25 years of transitioning  hundreds of design, construction and facility owner organizations — these are the 5 typical  investment costs; for your consideration.

To be clear – the Revit transition will change how all of the “pieces” connect and create the new “BIM-process picture” for your organization.

These will be upfront and ongoing investment costs. However, the costs are “time and financial investments”; that can be planned within your budgets and billing processes. If properly implemented, documented and managed; they should provide a Return-On-Invest (ROI) from your BIM transition efforts.

For now, I’ve listed them below; many times with a link to a related article. Over time; I’ll fill in the blanks with more detailed articles –that best explain how these made “the list” from my 10+ years of client Revit implementation experiences.

1 ) Hire a Revit Implementation Consultant

A consultant should deliver a full assessment of your current staff, technologies, consultants, document distribution, graphic standards, and workflow processes.

This person and/or organization should prescribe & deliver a roll-out recommendation with implementation options, schedule and budget.

Your most effective method to quickly succeed, is to hire someone;,who can help you design your “Revit Road Map” –prior to starting the Revit implementation journey.

2) Revit Software & Computer Systems\Networks:

The Revit software, computer systems & network will need to be better and faster; than the typical CAD workstations. The Revit project files will be larger; while Revit supports the benefit of several people simultaneously, accessing the same project file.

3) Revit Training and Continued Education

Revit’s functionality and processes are far different than AutoCAD. Training will be required; to learn both the new software and the valuable productivity process enhancements. Designing a custom learning program; will expedite your Revit implementation plan –that is specific to  your firm’s staff and projects. You’ll improve your Return-On-Investment by rolling out Revit faster, on more projects.

4) BIM Manager Role and Position

How do you prepare for the BIM Manager role and position in your organization? Do you hire from outside your firm or train from within? The BIM Manager responsibilities far exceed the role of a CAD Manager –which many times; was associated with managing project graphic standards, file organization and training.

5) Revit (Family) Building Product Content Library – Standards

Assembling and managing a Revit Library of reliable building product content for your projects –will determine the efficiency of your Revit projects. There are hundreds of building product manufacturers; that provide free, pre-built Revit content (windows, fixtures, walls)  –where almost none existed 10 years ago.

The efficient use of  Revit VOIDS will minimize your Revit family file size. Bradley Revit Library (1,000 Revit Families) reduces both the number of voids and the size of the voids in our Revit families.

Its been my experience, that Extrusions (solids and voids) produce a smaller Revit family file sizes; when compared to using of Sweeps and Revolves.

I recommend incorporating the Revit Voids within the extrusion as “closed loops”; within the “extrusion’s closed loop”. This avoids the creation of individual VOIDS; that need to be Cut from the solid extrusion.

Consider using VOID Extrusions to efficiently sculpt your Revit family model.

Over-sized Extrusions increase the Revit family file size.

For example, if the void is penetrating 1/2″ of material, use a void that is 5/8″ to 3/4″ deep. Excessively deep voids create larger Revit family file sizes.

1. Use the extrusion’s grips and stretch the void to a smaller depth OR
2. Edit the Depth, Extrusion End or Extrusion Start Values in the Void Extrusion Properties Dialogue box.

Use these same procedures for creating Revit In-Place Families in the Revit Project.

• “Improved IFC Import” imports IFC models to Revit using extra features that improve the interpretation of architectural models, and

Congratulations and our thanks to the 2013 Central States Revit Workshop Event Planners –for conducting and delivering an amazing 2-day Revit learning event in Omaha.

With more than 40 learning sessions in 2-days; it was challenging to select “my sessions” from the roster of speakers, trainers and consultants that provided their Revit and BIM-based presentations.

Revit attendees came from across the country; Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Minnesota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, North Carolina, California, Washington, Wisconsin and Canada. Many of these Revit users brought members from their Local Revit User Groups.

Personally, I’ve found organized learning events (CSRW, AU, RTC, CAD Camp) –supported by local user groups (LUG); provide some of the best education, networking and professional development experiences.

As a member of several Local User Groups (LUGs – Revit, AutoCAD, WI BIM Managers); I’ve seen  LUG membership serve as great business development and networking tools for design and construction firms.

We regularly see our LUG members collaborating on future projects; once they’ve built “trust factors” with members through our meetings and learning events.

Trust and collaboration remain key ingredients of any successful business or project team. When you are using collaborative processes, like BIM and IPD; they are essential.

My first meeting with Brian Payne was at the March 2013 ArchiSpec Conference in Savannah Georgia.

I was facilitating a group discussion on “BIM-Automated Specification Processes” for about 30 specification writers.

Specifiers shared “the good, the bad and the ugly” recommendations for successfully implementing e-SPECS, SpecLink or MasterSpec within their offices’ BIM processes.

Throughout the discussion; Brian shared several successful processes that he developed to connect his firm’s BIM and specification processes –using e-SPECS.

Fast forward to August 2013 –>> and we find Brian touring Bradley’s Corporate Headquarters & Fixture Manufacturing Facility in Menomonee Falls.

Brian mentioned that he created an “Implementing Auto-Specification Software With Revit“  Presentation for RTC 2013 in Vancouver Canada. He emailed the links and I have the opportunity to share his docs with you.

Tips and Tricks to Make Your Autodesk® Revit® Drawings and Presentations Look Great!

Steven Shell‘s CSRW Revit Class used story-telling and project images to demonstrate;

–how easy it is to take your Revit project presentations; from ordinary to memorable.

“Remember, when “pitching” your designs to a client — keep it simple for you, but make the visualization extraordinary for them. Make things POP visually!

Help the client visualize your ideas for their project. Provide them with a memorable experience of you and your design proposal. It helps your work “stand-out” during the competitive and sometimes “crowded” proposal process.”

For Steven, the marketing + proposal process is just the beginning.

He demonstrated several Revit features; that help his design drawings to “read better” (standout) throughout the course of the project. From design option presentations, into construction drawings and contract administration documents.

In the days of hand-drawing and CAD — we used hand sketching techniques like multiple line-widths, line-types, hatch or poche’, color and shading. It helped emphasize or de-emphasize elements in our construction detailing, floor plans, elevations, sections, casework drawings and overlaid consultant drawings.

His presentation showed how to use Revit, without rendering or using Photoshop; to make his presentations POP for his consultants, contractors and facility owners.

Here are just 5 basic features (from my 4-pages of notes) –from Steven’s CSRW class; that were applied to this interior Revit Project View:

1. Turn On Ambient Shadows in Hidden Line View
2. Add Background Image to Hidden Line View
3. Apply Graphic Override to Individual Element
4. Apply Graphic Override to Category
5. Switch Hidden Line View to Realistic View

This is a storyboard of a 5-minute process; that upgraded a standard, hidden-line Revit Camera View –to a Revit Realistic View.

Remember all Element or Category Graphics Overrides are View-Specific. Some View parameters can be stored in a Revit View Template –and applied to other views.

While visiting Salt Lake City, I was reminded of the role and value; that architectural models previously provided the design and construction teams of large facility projects.

The South Visitors Center of Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City Utah; provides a scale model of the Salt Lake Temple.

The tour guide mentions that it took 40 years to build the Salt Lake Temple.

Scaled architectural models made of wood & plaster, full-size prints of iron work, stain-glass window patterns, staircase handrails & bannisters; are just a few  design tools I’ve found when renovating historic & older buildings.

Sometimes, the designers realized they might not see the completed construction of their designs; on very large facility projects.

They went to great lengths to ensure their design intent was documented both dimensionally and visually. This enabled both current or future generations of designers and craftsman to complete in detail –their intended designs.

My tours around Salt Lake City revealed many of the city’s oldest and newest facility design projects. You can take in many of the free or low cost architectural tours over the course of a Saturday and Sunday.

Revit (BIM) Managers typically use the Revit SAVEAS Command and its “Compact File” Option to reduce a  Revit project file size.

Bradley uses this process, as one of the last procedures; that we apply to reduce the file size of our final Revit Family models.

It’s pretty common, to build a Bradley Revit family product model; that may be –800K in file size. Once we use this process; it may reduce the file size to 325-365K.

Consider testing this procedure on your Revit family library models or Revit family content; that you download from other Revit libraries.

Remember to delete or purge unused content within your families (materials, nested families, subcategories, CAD files, line patterns); prior to using this “Compact File” procedure in the Revit SAVEAS command.

How do you envision “the cloud” when you hear the term “Revit cloud computing”;

Do you envision “the cloud” as just a remote computer server for centrally storing and accessing of your Revit project files?

Below, are just 5 major costs and processes for managing current Revit projects –the Revit Cloud seeks to change that.

The efficiency of Revit Cloud functionally offers the opportunity to evolve, replace or potentially eliminate these Revit process costs?

1) Change Management

The BIM Managers for each discipline coordinate the daily or weekly “hand-offs” of their Revit model updates between each discipline.

The goal is to provide timely updates of Revit project files across the team –thereby, insuring everyone has the most current design information.

Revit Cloud: A centrally located Revit project model eliminates the file transfer between FTP servers and automates the revision control process.

In addition, it gives contractors, manufacturers and vendors early project access to contribute their expertise during the design process.

One Revit model –allows on-demand collision and constructability testing throughout the entire design + construction processes. This includes cost estimating, fabrication prep, auto-specifications writing, construction phasing, pre-ordering of building products, commissioning documentation and ongoing building code review.

2) File Linking

Architects, engineers and contractors still link their individual Revit models –to form the “complete” Revit project model. Printing, design coordination and clash detection between disciplines; is conducted using linked models.

Revit Cloud: Design and construction teams work simultaneously in one “cloud-based” integrated facility model. A higher level of discipline specific worksets & filters is required to avoid the linking of separate consultant models.

3) Software Costs & Consolidation

As the Revit model becomes the “host” of all project design decisions; more design & management staff need to access the Revit project.

To accommodate access for their larger teams; firms purchase more of the  of Revit Network Version Software licensing.

There is also the cost of 3rd party Revit add-ons\apps, software installation and  applying service packs,  system & network maintenance and technical support.

Revit Cloud: The Revit platform continues to consolidate the individual Revit software (architecture, structure, MEP) into all-inclusive Revit Suites.

The Revit Cloud becomes a source for Revit software and modules. From your desktop, laptop or mobile device, you access Revit software and your project.

The project software will always be current, new functionality & service packs are added automatically and your costs are “pay-as-you-go” on high-end equipment that is maintained 24/7 as part of your subscription costs.

4) Revit Project Family Library

As designers choose building components; they gather  and share their manufacturer building product Revit models –or create them internally. Each discipline needs variations of these Revit family models for their specific application.

For example, an architect’s Revit plumbing fixture may not include  the product’s MEP connections that are required by the MEP engineer. In turn, the MEP engineer’s model has MEP connections; but does not include the plumbing fixture’s solid model components.

Unfortunately, consultants’ Revit models don’t always include modeling and/or data for every discipline. In other words, its rare for a discipline to cost-justify creating a Revit model; that’s inclusive for everyone on the project team.

Revit Cloud: A single manufacturer’s Revit model is used by all team members.

A manufacturer’s product model is collaboratively built to serve all disciplines. It’s visibility settings and parameter data are inclusive to all phases and disciplines.

If a manufacturer’s model does not exist, the model is built collaboratively and stored in the project library A model’s parameter data is immediately connected to the Revit auto-specification writing, estimating system, building code and commissioning systems.

5) Computer Processing | The Need for Speed

The Revit project file is extremely large for each discipline. In response, Revit Managers have created processes and purchased faster computers, operating systems, networks and load them with more RAM.

All this to to accommodate the “need for speed” for

• loading large Revit project files,
• worksharing the project using Revit worksets,
• rendering exterior & interior 3D views,
• simultaneous, Revit project file access by multiple designers,
• creating animated walk-throughs, sun shadow studies and building analysis.

1) Logistically, its easier to manage embedded data parameters of more than 1,000 Revit models; as one inclusive model for all disciplines.

2) Ideally, a manufacturer’s Revit model that is shared amongst the team; guarantees data consistency and minimizes the modeling costs for everyone. Consider this:

How often will your consultant(s) build a Revit model for them and for your discipline? How often do you build Revit models for your consultants?

Bradley anticipated Revit Managers would remove content from Bradley Revit models; to meet their standards, preferences and criteria.  It is far easier, faster and cheaper for them to delete content, from an all-inclusive Revit model.

Once they remove family content; perhaps after adding their own shared \family parameters –they will save a Bradley Revit family file down to a smaller file size.

Architectural designers may remove the MEP connections, solids or voids –keeping only basic solids, masking regions and symbolic line-work.

Each year, millions of Bradley Revit families are downloaded by our global audience.

In October 2012, we began exploring our options to expand the Bradley BIM Library syndication.

BIMSTOP offers its Revit Building Product Manufacturer Library in several countries. They also offer hosting and model creation for Revit, ArchiCAD, Vectorworks and Bentley.

The BradleyBIM Blog stats confirmed our need to expand. Since 2011, it has served as a Revit and BIM resource for our global designers and contractors.

Launching the BIMSTOP Bradley Revit Library agreement; coincides with Bradley Corporation’s expanded product line agreements with Bradley Australia.

Bradley Australia (not owned by Bradley Corporation) will begin using the Bradley Revit models for Bradley products; that are available for Australia and New Zealand.
