Revit Keltech Water Heater Clearance Box

Each Keltech Revit Family includes a clearance box, defined by a red, transparent solid  with dashed-line boundaries.

Download - The Keltech Tankless Water Heater -- 3D ISO View Displaying Clearance BoxThe Clearance Box serves several purposes:

  1. The 3D clearance Box assists with  the design-construction BIM clash-interference detection and coordination.
  2. It helps the designer to visually design the space, with adequate installation and maintenance clearances around for this equipment.

The Keltech Tankless Water Heater -- Properties - Clearance Box Parameter

The Clearance Box has an [ON/OFF] visibility switch; which is located in the PROPERTIES dialog box  of the selected Keltech Revit Family.

The parameter is located under the Construction Header > as Clearance Space

revit_keltech_tankless_water_heater_plan_view

It is an Instance-based parameter, that can be toggled ON/OFF for each unit.

The Keltech Tankless Water Heater -- Front View Displaying Clearance Box

Visibility of the clearance box will be displayed in the Plan, Front and Right Views.

The Keltech Tankless Water Heater -- Right View Displaying Clearance Box

The Keltech electric supply connector is located in the back of the unit and is “field drilled” at the time of installation.

Two parameters are installed in the Keltech Revit family models, to assist Construction VDC Managers; that are creating the facility as-built models.

  1. Electrical Connector Top Inset
  2. Electrical Connector Right Inset

These two parameters locate the final position of the field-drilled electrical connection hole on the back of the unit.

Keltech Field Drilled Electrical Connector ParametersThe position and sizing of a Keltech water heater model, is derived from the Top of the Heater; which serves as the datum for most of the dimensional parameters.

How to Change a Revit Family Category Designation

$
0

Revit Family Editor - Change the Revit Family Category

Every Revit family is assigned a specific category; based on the Revit Family Template that was originally used to create the Revit family.

The Power of a Revit Family’s Category Designation;

  1. controls the family’s visibility in each view; using the View Visibility (VV) Settings.
  2. defines the Revit Tag that can be used for tagging the family
  3. determines the Revit Schedule Type that will list & schedule the Revit family

When your Revit family…

  1. doesn’t respond to turning on/off its visibility in the view…
  2. can’t be tagged with it’s appropriate category tag…
  3. doesn’t show up in its designated Revit Schedule…

…You need to review and revise that family’s Category Designation.

Simple Steps to Change a Revit Family Category Designation

revit_family_editor_change_revit_family_category_parameters

Open the Revit Family in the Revit Family Editor.

In the upper left corner of the Revit Ribbon, select the Family Category and Parameters icon.

revit_family_category_setting

In this example, a Washroom Accessory Revit Family has a Furniture Category designation.

This is why the Revit Family –

  1. visibility is not controllable under Specialty Equipment Category visibility setting.
  2. can’t be tagged with a Specialty Equipment Tag.
  3. is not listed in the Revit Specialty Equipment Schedule.

While this dialog box is open; let’s change its category to Specialty Equipment.

revit_family_editor_change_revit_family_category_specialty_equipment

Press OK — and SAVE the Revit Family.

Final Step — Load / Re-Load the Revit Family into the project.

Typically, most experienced Revit / BIM Managers will test these settings prior to releasing a Revit family into their company and project standards.

However, “things happen” — and this is a quick edit to update the Revit Family.

3D Scanning – Revit Expedites Structural Analysis of Rooftop Process Piping

$

excel_engineers_rooftop_process_pipe_manufacturing_facility_roofAsbuilts and Inspections: How can you expedite and accurately determine the structural point loads of existing, rooftop process piping on a roof?

Excel Engineering (Fond du Lac, WI) answered this question; using a combination of 3D high definition laser scanning, structural analysis and Autodesk Revit software.

3D Laser Scan of Manufacturer's Roof with Process Piping Using a high definition laser scanner, Excel’s 3D Scanning/Survey Department collected several 3D scans of the roof; from 3 locations along the perimeter of the roof –over 2 days.

While onsite, the survey engineers, could quickly download and review the 3D laser scan point cloud on the 3D scanner. Thereby, validating quality prior to leaving the project site.

In the office, they converted portions of the point cloud into solid pipes; around the roof areas for structural point-load analysis.

View Excel Engineering 3D Scanning-Survey Department WebsiteExcel’s Structural Engineering Department created a basic Revit footprint of the manufacturing facility; modeling the exterior walls and the structural column layout.

The point cloud and the converted 3D piping files were loaded / linked individually into the Revit facility model. Structural engineers could easily coordinate the review and analysis of the roof’s structural integrity; that was supporting the process piping.

The benefits of using 3D laser scanning and a hybrid Revit BIM process;

  1. avoided the outdated, costly, time-consuming manual field measurement and documentation process.
  2. delivered a 3D point cloud and converted 3D piping files; that were loaded and aligned into into the Revit facility model.
  3. delivered a highly coordinated, very reliable as-built model in a fraction of  time — providing the client with significant savings.
  4. significantly reduced the time required by the structural engineers to analyze  the project; which also eliminated all the typical travel costs.

How does 3D laser scanning work?

Here’s a short video from Excel Engineering.

Bentley Systems BIM Content Announcement for Revit RFA File FormatThe 2013 AIA National Convention and Expo featured a large Technology Pavilion with more than 40 technology vendors.

Bentley Systems BIM Content Announcement for Revit RFA File FormatMy visit with the Bentley Software Manager at the Denver AIA Convention; confirmed the details of Bentley’s upcoming support of the Revit Family RFA file format.

Bentley announced their upcoming  “Content Strategy” on May 24 2013, including the RFA Interpreter for Revit Component Families.

View Bradley Corporation | Building Product Manufacturer Revit Family LibraryView Complete Article: Bentley Content Strategy | RFA Interpreter

Bentley Content Strategy will provide Bentley building product content creation & management tools and native Revit Component Family content support.

1. Bentley | Creating Content (Parametric Content Modeler)
2. Bentley | Content Repository and Management (Content Management Service)
3. Revit | Utilizing Existing Manufacturers’ Content (RFA Interpreter)

The RFA Interpreter Summary, defines what it WILL do and what it WILL NOT do.

RFA Interpreter in the AECOsim Building Designer WILL:

  • Support RFA content versions 2009-2014
  • Access and select the types defined within the RFA
  • Retain its native parametric behaviors and properties, which will be exercisable in AECOsim Building Designer (such as lengths and angles)
  • Retain its business properties (Such as manufacturer, catalog number, and fire rating)
  • Retain its perforator, to allow content to cut openings (such as doors and windows)
  • Retain its mechanical & plumbing connection points (for air handlers, plumbing fixtures, etc.)
  • Retain its 2D plan and elevation symbols
  • Register itself with the DataGroup Catalog, mapping its business and parametric properties to counterparts in AECOsim Building Designer
  • Map RFA attributes to ABD symbology and/or Part & Family
  • Behave like a native ABD element (similar to BXF or PAZ)

The RFA Interpreter in AECOsim Building Designer WILL NOT support:

  • Revit system types (walls, curtain wall, stairs, etc..)
  • 2D only RFAs (title blocks tags, profiles, etc..)
  • Embedded formats (DWG, SKP, etc. placed inside the RFA)
  • Changing the original RFA definition

The article further describes the RFA Wizard for importing content into a Bentley format

View Complete Article: Bentley Content Strategy | RFA Interpreter

It mentions “We expect to begin Beta Testing of this exciting new addition to AECOsim Building Designer in July 2013 and “NO”, it does not require a copy of Revit or a specialized cloud service to use the RFA Interpreter. Stay tuned for more details!!”

The Bentley Software Manager also referenced a late 2013 release date — perhaps November-December 2013 roll-out with Bentley’s next version release.
