View ArcKit Architectural Model Building Kit Website - SketchUp 3D Warehouse Integration

Architect Damien Murtagh ArcKit creator has designed a physical (non-digital) architectural model-building kit that has a virtual (digital) version in the  SketchUp 3D Warehouse design center.

Located next to the Bradley BIM Booth in the AIA Software & Technology Pavilion; I watched hundreds of AIA Convention attendees walk past Damien’s ArcKit booth — only to  be drawn back to his booth to research his model building kits.

While Damien enjoys the value of his manual design tools, like model building, onion skin and pencil sketches. He was seeking a method to connect today’s digital architects and architecture design students with ArcKit. Integrating SketchUp 3D Warehouse ArcKit Library achieved that goal.

Navisworks | Contractors Revit – BIM Model Viewer

Architects, engineers and general contractors use BIM authoring software (Revit, Bentley, ArchiCAD, Vectorworks) to create BIM files for design, prefabrication and construction.

However, general contractors and facility owners will also use a BIM file viewing and coordination tool; called Autodesk Navisworks.

Navisworks is a “file-neutral” BIM file viewer; that allows contractors to view a hybrid, composite BIM facility model. It may be composed of a mixture of linked BIM and 3D CAD files from several BIM \ CAD authoring software packages.

Navisworks Project Images Courtesy of Turner Construction

Ideally, its better to have a project’s BIM files created by the same BIM authoring software; Autodesk Revit, Bentley Microstation, Graphisoft ArchiCAD or Nemetschek Vectorworks.

However, in reality project BIM files may have been created by a variety of both BIM and 3D CAD software packages. The MEP contractor will link the various BIM and CAD files together (HVAC, electrical, architectural, structural); to create a fully coordinated facility model.

+++ Turner Construction Design-Build BIM Study | Serving the BIM Kool-Aid +++

Navisworks can be a single software; that helps the contractor or owner to view a fully coordinated project BIM file –created with several BIM \ CAD file formats. Which financially, means the contractor does not have to buy all BIM and CAD software that created the project files. They also don’t need to spend training money to learn each of the BIM and CAD software packages.

Navisworks Trade Coordination - Hospital Main Kitchen - Navisworks Project Images Courtesy of Turner Construction

Example of Color-coding Duct-work & Piping \ 3D Annotation Tools.

Navisworks analyzes the coordinated facility model and verifies; that the architectural and MEP content is not interfering with other building components. This 3D space analysis is termed ‘clash detection’ or ‘interference detection’.

It uses a ‘set of rules’ defined by the contractor; to check if its acceptable to have a diffuser occupying the same space on a ceiling with a light fixture. These ‘rules’ can be saved and run for clash detection on the current or future projects. Navisworks is ‘learning’ what is acceptable and what situations must be corrected prior to construction.

+++ BIM Process Improving Construction Site Safety | Turner Construction +++

For example, Navisworks can verify

  1. the sprinkler heads are not occupying the same space as a light fixture.
  2. a hot water pipe is not running through a column.
  3. a door and a window do not occupy the same space in a wall.

These are 3 examples of coordinating the design and construction processes “in the computer” using BIM –prior to onsite construction.

Navisworks provides this automated “interference detection” between the trades’ models; while providing “3D mark-up” tools for enhanced communication between the designer & contractor.

Thank You From Bradley Corpration

My \ Our  thanks to Jeff Bauer, VDC\BIM Manager – Turner Construction for providing the Navisworks project images.

Intro to Chemistry Meets Revit

Revit Floor Plan of Chemistry Lab Classroom Assignment

The Intro to Chemistry Assignment

A couple years ago, our college intern, Rachel Hughes received a high school ‘Introduction to Chemistry’ assignment to…

…calculate the volume (in cubic centimeters) of her irregularly-shaped Chemistry classroom, with a a sloped ceiling.

While she was taking architecture AutoCAD classes; she was willing to learn how to solve this problem using Revit Architecture. Her Chemistry teacher approved the use of Revit to solve the assignment and asked for a brief description of the steps she used.

We used a Revit “test drive” training process; that I developed for expediting my students’ Revit classes. She took the Revit “steering wheel” and two hours later discovered the answer to her Chemistry assignment. While enjoying the intuitive “test drive” of her first Revit project –it also underscored the value of “I” in BIM.

“Revit creates the entire room faster than my AutoCAD.”

Revit Building Section of Chemistry Lab Classroom

Here’s a summary and brief description of sequential Revit steps taken; that she submitted to the Chemistry Teacher.

She and her chemistry partner field-verified the classroom measurements prior to starting her first Revit project.

  • A new Revit project was started; by selecting an architectural Revit template
  • The project units were set to centimeters
  • Using the wall command, she created the floor plan and dimensioned the inside faces of the room using field measurements.
  • Inserted doors, windows while adding several new family types to match her field measurements of the openings.
  • Add a Revit Building Section nark across the room to display the sloped ceiling.
  • Add a room object \ room tag to display area in square centimeters. (edit family label unit format & reload tag family into project)
  • From section view, add a room tag to display volume of room in cubic centimeters

View-Download Bradley HALO Revit emergency face \ eyewash fixture familiesPlace plan symbols for fire extinguisher, Bradley emergency face\eyewash & fire alarm.

  • A Revit Level was added & an existing level was modified to set sloped ceiling heights.
  • Create a sloped ceiling using the ceiling Sketch option.
  • A room schedule was created, displaying room area and volume

Revit Room Schedule of Chemistry Lab Classroom

The Revit model schedule yielded the room volume answer in cubic centimeters.

  • A B-size title block was added to the sheets. She edited the title block family; adding & deleting parameter content specific to her class. Then reloaded the edited title block back into her Revit project.
  • After adding a few more B-size sheets, she placed Plan, Section and Room Schedule views on their individual sheets.
  • She pressed the Print button, selected the sheets for printing and created a PDF file.
  • A quick “attach” to email and her print out was on its way to her Chemistry teacher.

View Details of Bradley BIM 2.0 | Revit Family Library Update – September 2014 ArticleRachel completes her summer 2014 internship (paid) with Bradley this week; as she returns to college.

We thank her for her work on the Bradley BIM 2.0 Update; that upgraded the “I” in 750+ Bradley Revit models; while improving the Revit project performance of the Revit model components.

Who knew a Chemistry 101 class; would serve as a base for your career’s Revit learning?

Bradley Verge LVD Lavatory System Rendering Using Revit Cloud Autodesk 360 from Revit 2013A core strategic advantage to Revit Cloud computing is simple; it’s called ‘Infinite Computing’.

From your local Revit software, you are accessing the raw power of computing equipment; that has  both processing and memory resources; that you can’t buy for your desktop, laptop or tablet computer.

I processed this rendered image in 9 minutes (Best\Final Quality, 31 Artificial light sources) using the ‘Infinite Computing‘ power of Autodesk 360.

Revit Cloud Potential | 5 Game-Changing Processes

Revit Rendering Using Revit Cloud Autodesk 360 from Revit 2013In 45-minutes, I processed six rendered views (from a 120MB project) including one panoramic-JPG (360 view)  that displays an animated, rendered view of the entire locker room.

Previously, it took 45-minutes to process one rendering from this view; using a workstation quality laptop with 16GB of RAM, 64-bit OS & Revit.

5 Revit Presentation Tips | Architect Steven Shell

The Autodesk 360 rendering dashboard, features several image editing and ‘Re-render’ tools; to modify the initial rendered image\view.

Revit Rendering Autodesk 360 Image Editing \ Re-render ToolsDesigners are always seeking better and faster visual tools; to confirm their clients’ approval of their proposed design options.

Revit Cloud-based rendering ‘levels the playing field’ for sole-proprietorships, smaller staffed studios & design firms. They can create more design options, more quickly  for their clients’ approval; while greatly minimizing their time + labor costs.

Carl Bass - Autodesk CEO Defines Infinite Computing in Design & Motion InterviewDesign & Motion: Carl Bass Infinite Computing

“Up until now we’ve all thought about computing all wrong, we’ve treated computing as this precious resource, where really, it’s an abundant resource, and if you look at all the trends around it, it’s increasing available, increasingly powerful, decreasing in cost, and increasingly elastic because of the cloud.

What you need to start doing is to think of computing as though it were infinite.”

3 Planning Tips | BPM Revit-BIM Content Marketing Guide

$
0
0

BIM Library Belongs On Building Product Manufacturer (BPM) Corporate Website#1 – Building Product Manufacturer (BPM) Website Hosts BIM Files

Typically, a Building Product Manufacturers’ (BPM) Marketing Department creates BIM files to promote the specification of their products; within their clients’ BIM design projects.

While BIM files promote the manufacturer’s brand; successful pre-built BIM files provide real cost-savings to the BPM’s design + contracting customers. BPM BIM files provide the manufacturers’ distribution network with digital planning tools to assist designers + contractors’ with their project product selection process.

Logically, a Marketing Department should choose the building product manufacturer’s website as the first and best location for file-hosting of their BIM files.

  1. Links to the BPM’s digital design files (BIM, CAD, specifications) should be prominently displayed on the front page of the corporate website
  2. Indicate the BIM file-types of your products for your clients to download. (Revit, ArchiCAD, Vectorworks or Bentley BIM files)
  3. Within the BIM Library, populate product images, contact links, product warranties, construction specifications and tech data sheets around your individual BIM files.

Fact: Designers expect to find and search for a BPM’s BIM files on the BPM website, first. They assume the most current files are located on the BPM website with supporting documentation.

Tip: Do not syndicate the BIM Files with BPM BIM File Library Websites or BIM File modeling service websites; until the BIM library is completely hosted on the BPM website.

For example, our corporate BIM Library website annually delivers more than 5 million Revit model downloads to our visitors. Collectively, four BIM Libraries that host \ syndicate our Revit models, achieve only 10% of our total annual website downloads.

The Bradley  BIM library was hosted on our corporate website for 18 months; prior to adding other BIM Library services.

Know Your Product Market | Start BIM Library Around the Most Used BIM Software#2 – Know Your Client Market & Design Tools

Where are you selling the majority of your products? USA? Europe? UK? Middle East? China? Australia?

What BIM software are your design and construction clients using in your major sales market(s)?

If the USA is your major market; Autodesk Revit is the dominant BIM software tool.

Fact: Planning strategically, more US Revit design firms, projects & software users; will financially benefit from pre-built BPM Revit models.

By serving the BPMs’ major market (first), the BPM obtains the best, initial financial Return-On-Investment (ROI); for creating BIM files for their clients’ software.

BPMs will benefit from their clients’ input in a larger market; as they share ideas and functionality they want from their BPM BIM files.

Once their major market has been served, the BPM reviews how to serve the 2nd most popular BIM software used by the BPM’s clients.

BIM Library Kick-Off:

  1. Define (major sales market, budget, product list, web location & pages, manager, etc) for a BIM Library ‘Pilot Project‘ in an Autodesk Revit file format. (if the US is the BPM’s major market)
  2. Manufacturers’ define a short list of their best products; that will be modeled & distributed by the ‘pilot project’ to their major market.
  3. The Sales Department will typically identify their top-selling 5-10 products as the best candidates for the initial BIM library.

BIM - Revit File Quality is King#3 – Quality BIM Content is King

Designers use manufacturers’ pre-built BPM BIM files as the “virtual equivalent” of the manufacturers’ real products.

Realize, if your BIM file quality does not meet BIM \ VDC Managers’ quality requirements; your BIM files will be rejected.

Model rejection, based on lack of functional quality, eliminates the risk; that poorly created BIM files will corrupt the firms’ BIM workflow processes & project standards.

What happens if your BIM files are disqualified from the firms’ standard BIM libraries?  Your real products may be excluded for consideration; from the firms’ standard specifications.

Myth: Providing a BIM file for your product guarantees the designer, engineer, contractor or owner will use your product.

Before hiring a BIM file modeler\consultant or contracting with a BIM Library Service

  1. Ask for detailed recommendations from the architects, engineers or contractors; that actually used the BIM content modelers-providers manufacturers’ BIM files.
  2. Organize a BIM file evaluation team with several of your design & construction clients.
  3. Depending on the complexity of your product; ask the prospective BIM content modelers-providers to create 1, 2 or 3 BIM product sample files.
  4. Next, submit these sample BIM files to your client BIM file review group. Ask for their ‘project review‘ of the BIM files’ quality and performance.

Fact: A great BIM product file of a bad product, will not get the bad product specified.  However, a bad BIM file of a great product –may exclude the product from objective design review.

The (1) Planning Phase creates a road-map for the next phases; (2) Modeling, (3) Marketing & (4) Managing a BPM BIM Initiative & BIM Library

The Planning Phase identifies a project manager, defines a pilot project, project costs, website placement, BPM ROI for BIM Library costs and potential clients for the BIM Library review group.

This is the first article in a short series of BPM BIM Content Marketing Articles. Three future articles Modeling, Marketing & Managing a BPM BIM Initiative & BIM Library –will feature 3 market-proven tips from our BIM Initiative founded in 2009.

View AGC CM-BIM Website Page for Certificate description, applications and testing centers.Transitioning your design, engineering, and construction processes from CAD to BIM processes – requires a BIM Implementation Plan; that budgets for technology and process training.

For those that have implemented BIM; this is an obvious, logical process for success.

Revit Implementation Puzzle – 5 Basic Planned Investments

However; for newcomers to the BIM process — its hard to ask the planning questions when you either don’t know the questions to ask OR why you are asking those questions.

A series of BIM Prep classes may be the answer. During my Baltimore visit with Gilbane’s BIM Manager, he described a series of classes; that has been helpful to educate owners on 4 topic areas of asking for  BIM on their projects.

Nationally, he’s seen design and engineering principals attend these same classes; as a prerequisite to ‘road mapping’ BIM Process Initiatives in their own firms.

I’ve highlighted these classes during my national BIM education classes and workshops. Attending owners, designers and contractors have provided their positive experiences from attending these classes –so here’s a course description that you can download of the AGC CM-BIM Certificate and its 4 classes.

View AGC CM-BIM Website Page for Certificate description, applications and testing centers. The AGC Certificate of Management-Building Information Modeling (CM-BIM) is an assessment-based certificate credential; that denotes knowledge and understanding of concepts related to BIM adoption, practice and process transformation outlined in the AGC BIM Education Program. Successful candidates will carry the CM-BIM designation.

Skanska Revit-MEP Prefabrication | Ford Assembly Line Flash Back?

henry_ford_assembly_line_getty_imagesSimilar to Henry Ford’s revolutionary assembly line processes; BIM processes are reshaping the MEP  design and construction (manufacturing) processes for facility projects.

Ford’s automated automobile assembly-line process; reduced labor time & costs, while reducing material waste with modular, standardized parts.

Sheer production of the Model T dramatically increased. The production time for a single car dropped from over twelve hours to just 93 minutes due to the introduction of the assembly line.

design_build_mep_prefabrication_skanska_01Skanska Construction’s BIM MEP Prefabrication construction processes are highlighted online via Tradeline with an insightful, visual article;

Building Blocks: Offsite Prefabrication Saves Time and Money — Compressed Work Schedules, Worker Safety, and Access to Constrained Sites Top Benefits

Several maturing, project delivery processes are integrated to produce more efficient, ‘manufacturing-oriented’ design and construction processes.

  1. Building Information Modeling (BIM),
  2. Design-Build,
  3. Integrated Project Delivery (IPD),
  4. Cloud Computing & Mobile Technologies
  5. Lean Construction
  6. BIM: Design to Fabrication Workflow
  7. Prefab & Modularization,

BIM Means Business for Plumbing Heating-Cooling Contractors

design_build_mep_prefabrication_skanska_03 Based on recent McGraw-Hill’s SmartMarket Reports –today’s processes are reducing the  unrecoverable [Time + Labor + Material] costs. These costs are\were typically absorbed by a project’s design and construction businesses. Thereby, resulting in higher bids to owners on future projects –to cover the ‘unknown’ costs that ‘might’ incur.

The Ford assembly line significantly improved the car quality; while greatly reducing the retail price. A more affordable automobile serviced a much larger customer base.

The cost of the first Model T was set at $850… The assembly line cost of the Model T would eventually drop to $260 in 1924

Construction Worker and Owner Benefits: Skanska prefab processes utilize Lean Construction processes; that are safer, more efficient and less costly.

  1. Horizontal mechanical, electrical and plumbing multi-trade prefabrication modules are fabricated and assembled in an offsite construction facility.
  2. The typical layout of an offsite construction facility provides optimal adjacency for tools, raw materials, and personnel.
  3. Work that would normally require ladders and lifts is brought to hip-height racks on a warehouse floor in an offsite construction facility.
  4. Building components and systems are prefabricated on racks within a spacious, environmentally controlled work space –then transported to the project site.

Download the 60-page 2014 McGraw-Hill Construction SmartMarket BIM Report: Managing Uncertainty Expectations in Building Design and ConstructionPerfection is a baseline expectation when you purchase a product. But as experienced owners of building projects know, design and construction is an imperfect process with a variety of inherent uncertainties.

Given that reality, what can project teams do to identify, anticipate and mitigate the conditions and factors that drive uncertainty, and how can owners adjust their expectations of project team performance to align with reasonable, achievable metrics that truly benefit the project?

These are the core questions that are reviewed in this 60-page Managing Uncertainty and Expectations in Building Design and Construction SmartMarket Report, produced by McGraw-Hill Construction in partnership with the AIA Large Firm Roundtable.

2014 AIA Large Firm Roundtable Members

This report provides graphs, charts, interviews and the popular business case studies from real project outcomes.

Excerpts:

  • …the use of BIM by entire project team (50%) outranks the use of BIM by single firm (32%), further emphasizing the greater value of collaborative efforts.
  • BIM and Managing Uncertainty (Page 49)
  • More time for design firms to participate in coordination garners high votes from two thirds (66%) of all respondents. It is particularly supported by architects (80%), and also by the large contractors (74%), reinforcing the value of tighter designer/builder collaboration as an effective risk reduction strategy.
  • The findings cite that BIM is effective in mitigating uncertainty through virtual coordination and digital fabrication. All firms should embrace the best technologies for their area of the industry. For more information on BIM, including the Level of Development standard, see the BIMForum link in the Resources section on Page 61.

Mayo Clinic BIM Manager | Project Model Development Specification \ LOD

  • The technology-themed version of better communication calls for more extensive and smarter use of building information modeling (BIM) and digital design tools. These
are preferred because they allow all parties working on a building—owners, architects, contractors, specialty trades, fabricators and others—to access and interact with
design information that is up-to-date, accurate and trackable.

Skanska Revit-MEP Prefabrication | Assembly-Line Productivity

  • Construction Coordination Issues (53/100) often cause expensive rework. The use of BIM is making a major contribution to reducing both the incidence and severity of coordination problems. For more information on the use of BIM to manage uncertainty, see Page 49.
  • “By the intent of the process, BIM is collaborative,” he says. “In the traditional design-bid-build delivery model, you can have islands of self-interest. When you go down a BIM road, you’re in a collaborative environment, and that starts to connect those islands.”
  • It appears that BIM plays a role, because more (93%) of the owners who employ BIM on their projects report this high satisfaction with quality, compared with those who do not (84%). Only 2% say they are always disappointed in the quality they receive from their project teams.

Current BIM owners plan to actively increase the share of their projects that involve it with almost half(38% in UK and 40% in US) saying BIM will be used on more than three quarter of their work within two years.

Top BIM benefits perceived by owners include:

  • BIM visualization to enable better understanding of design.
  • Fewer problems during construction from deficient documents or coordination.
  • More well-reasoned design due to BIM analysis and simulation.
  • Beneficial impact on the project schedule.

Taking the Mystery Out of BIM for Owners & Principals | CM-BIM Classes

Excerpt: As owners expand their BIM involvement, there is a growing need for them to understand how best to enable their project teams to provide them with he greatest BIM value. In other words, what makes a good “BIM owner”? Several experienced AEC firms offer perspectives on that question.
